Tommy Tiernan launches WhistleBlast Quartet’s 2021 composition programme ‘Let’s Laugh’

Hurray! Tommy Tiernan has launched WhistleBlast Quartet’s 2021 Music Composition Programme, by joining group members, including Westport musician Mary Curran, in a fabulous fun-filled video ‘Let’s Laugh’! The project is helping to raise awareness of the great work of ISPCC Childline.

The WhistleBlast Quartet (Conor Linehan, piano; Ken Edge, saxes and clarinets, Oonagh Keogh, violin and Mary Curran, French horn ) is continuing to work with 200 nationwide students, both face-to-face and online and is this year expanding its programme, by offering free virtual masterclasses to every mainstream and special needs school in Ireland and beyond.

Quartet Director and Hornist Mary Curran said: "We were delighted to have the support of actor, comedian and television presenter Tommy Tiernan, who is no stranger to creating wonderfully imaginative ideas through words and laughter. He reminds us that anyone can use their imagination. It’s as easy as whistling!

"Currently, these can be tricky times for teenagers, however young people everywhere can benefit from watching WhistleBlast’s virtual presentations, which are carefully designed online resources, aimed at providing the necessary tools to help them express themselves through musical composition and performance. All musical styles and performance abilities are catered for and everyone is welcome to join in WhistleBlast’s uplifting 2021 Programme – ‘Let’s Laugh’.

"Again this year we’re highlighting how music-makers can help to make a difference for children by supporting the ISPCC’s Childline Listening Service and encouraging an awareness of this vital support for children and young people in Ireland.

"This is the second year our quartet and young student composers have supported Childline, after we raised awareness in summer 2020 with a special online composition piece - 'Then We’ll Meet Again'."

WhistleBlast is encouraging every young person to join in their virtual masterclasses at www.whistleblastquartet.com and have lots of fun and laughter through music making. Each week, a newly created short video will include a step-by-step guide to writing lyrics and composing melodies.
