Enjoy the fresh air but please park safely - urges local authority

Drivers are being urged to think about where and how they park when going out for their daily exercise, which must be within 5km from their home, according to Mayo County Council.

The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Richard Finn, said: "We want people to continue to enjoy the areas of outstanding beauty on their doorsteps. We understand in these difficult times exercise has never been important, but we would ask for considerate parking.

"We are asking everyone to please keep travelling-distances to a minimum, and within your local area only. Where possible, please walk or cycle rather than drive, to enjoy the fresh air.

"However, if you do drive to a spot within your local area, it is essential that safety is maintained for everyone using the area and the roadway, so please park considerately and safely.

"We would appreciate it if people remembered - while they want to access local walking spots - that people live and work on these areas; please be mindful about access for large emergency service vehicles/farm machinery and park appropriately and safely at these areas to ensure a clear route is available at all times.

"Whilst we encourage people to continue to use local green spaces for exercise/wellbeing during the current lockdown, please ensure that if you travel the permitted distance (within 5km from your home ), that you park in a safe and legal manner", said the Cathaoirleach.

Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer with the council, said: "We’re lucky to have so much beautiful countryside in Mayo. While we must now stay within 5km of our homes, it is a welcome sight to see so many exercising.

"Sadly, inconsiderate and dangerous parking in the countryside and towns has increased. Mayo County Council has put up barriers and no parking signs at some beauty spots and green areas due to inconsiderate parking.

"We have had several complaints regarding various locations around the county in relation to parking. Some of the parking is forcing pedestrians to walk off footpaths, or is blocking access to private property.

"Everyone is encouraged to use green areas but if you get there and there is no parking, then please find an alternative place to visit, because parking in these places does cause a risk on the road and may interfere with local residents causing distress. Stay healthy and stay safe."
