Munnelly welcomes Ballycastle water connection upgrade

Cllr Jarlath Munnelly has welcomed the confirmation by Irish Water that the connection from the Lisglennon Water Scheme to the town of Ballycastle is now operational.

Work to connect the water network in the north Mayo town was carried out during 2020, which included making the local well supplied system, which had served the area prior to this, redundant.

In November 2018, Ballycastle was placed on a boil water notice following a detection of cryptosporidium during routine testing of the water supply.

This led to calls to address the water supply issues on a long term bases.

The local Fine Gael councillor, who led the calls for the Ballycastle network to be connected to the mains water system serving north Mayo, welcomed the latest news from Irish Water.

He said: "I’m delighted that this work is complete and operational. Following the cryptosporidium outbreak of winter 2018/19, I placed a motion on the agenda of a Mayo County Council meeting calling for works to connect Ballycastle to the Lisglennon regional water network to be sped up.

"Two years on, and the work is complete. This is good for the whole area."

Cllr Munnelly concluded his remarks by thanking the staff of Mayo County Council, Irish Water, and in particular the contractors for completing this work satisfactorily.
