There were 5,107 cases of Covid-19 in the county up to the end of January and since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, with 3,247 of those coming in January alone.
The number of cases continued to drop over the final nine days of the month, with the last day in January seeing 30 new cases confirmed; however the total number of cases over the 14-day period up to January 31 stood at 721, down from 1,726 cases for the 14-day period up to Tuesday, January 23. The numbers continued to drop on the first day of February, where the confirmed cases dropped to 12 in the county.
In relation to the most recent Local Electoral Area (LEA ) figures, which were released last week, tracking data from January 12 to January 25 showed there were 253 cases in the Belmullet LEA - which was a drop on the two-week period before, but it still remained the Covid-19 high water mark in the country, with a 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 standing at 2,007.9. The Castlebar LEA had 296 cases over the two-week period, an incidence rate of 986.9. In the Claremorris LEA there were 199 cases, 143 in the Westport LEA, 119 in the Ballina LEA and 82 in the Swinford LEA.
There were 864 Covid-19 tests carried out in the MacHale Park Covid-19 testing centre in Castlebar in the week from Monday, January 25, to Sunday, January 31.
HSE West has reported that it continues to see case numbers fall, with the latest 14-day incidence showing: Galway 465/100,000, Mayo 619/100,00 and Roscommon 232/100,000.
Dr Breda Smyth, Director of Public Health, HSE West, stated: "This however, represents levels of infection comparable to the peak of wave 2. We have achieved a lot in recent weeks but we have further to go. We must continue to work from home and stay home if at all possible." She advised: "Stay apart, wear a mask and wash your hands."
