Ines Wurth brings her spellbinding one-woman show I Miss Communism to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday May 13 at 8pm.

I Miss Communism is a solo show written and developed by actress and writer Ines Wurth with writing partner and director, Mark Soper: a true personal account of Ines’ life growing up in Communist Croatia, through the war which ripped Yugoslavia apart, her escape to Los Angeles, and her return to her homeland to face the family and the world which has shaped her life. Voted Best Touring Show in the UK 2006 (Best Of The Best, Fringe Report ), nominated for the Amnesty International Award 2005 and Writer’s Guild Award. Mayo concert orchestra performs for two nights
Mayo Concert Orchestra brings its impressive musical talents to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for two special concerts on Monday May 11 and Tuesday May 12 at 8pm.
The orchestra presents a programme fusing classical compositions with contemporary arrangements. The orchestra has been in existence for over 11 years and, under the baton of George Lee, plays with a delightful energy and enthusiasm. This year’s repertoire brings the audience on a journey through time, including European folk dances, a selection of musical medleys and a nod to 20th century North America. Special guests include enchanting Soprano Francie McNicholas, and acclaimed Claremorris harpist Grainne Hambly, renowned for her sensitive and dynamic performances and three critically acclaimed solo CDs. A night of great music with a big feel good factor and a great opportunity to enjoy Mayo’s great musical talent.
Old time American music at the Linenhall
The very wonderful The Foghorn Trio brings its special brand of old-time American music to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday May 14 at 8pm.
Caleb Klauder and Stephen Sammy Lind began playing music together in 2000 in Portland, Oregon. Switching between guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo and vocals, they have performed traditional American old-time music all over the globe with their critically acclaimed band The Foghorn Stringband, and other projects with the likes of Riley Baugus, Dirk Powell and Kevin Burke.
The Foghorn’s style encompasses early country music, the fiddle repertoire of the Southern Appalachians and the Midwest, and the stringband sounds of the Piedmont region. Their vocals are simple and honest, with intertwining harmonies similar to the Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers. Although their repertoire is mainly traditional, Caleb's stellar original songs and tunes fit right in next to any classic. Special guest Nadine Landry of Canadian Bluegrass outfit Hungry Hill will be joining the lads on upright bass for this tour. A night of great music with great heart: Prepare to be enchanted.
Top trad to entertain you
Three top traditional musicians — Tony MacMahon, Angelina Carberry and Allan MacDonald — join their considerable forces for The Long Note at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Monday May 18 at 8pm.
The Long Note heads back into the mists of time to explore the musical traditions of Gaelic Scotland and Ireland. Master button accordion player and broadcaster Tony MacMahon has performed and worked with most of the great Irish trad players of the past half-century. On this tour he performs with virtuoso banjo player Angelina Carberry, who has wowed critics and fellow musicians alike with a series of acclaimed albums. Completing the top trio is expert piper Allan MacDonald, who hails from the Western Scottish Highlands, bringing to life the lyrical sounds of the rarely-heard pibroch (piobaireachd ). The Mariettas to bring the laughs
They’re back! Five Lamps Theatre Company brings the sparkling new comedy The Mariettas to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Friday 22nd and Saturday May 23 at 8pm.
Following the sell-out success of last year’s massive hit show The Telephone Exchange, Five Lamps Theatre Company is back with an exciting and warm-hearted new comedy by Telephone Exchange author Niamh Gleeson. The Marietta Showband is dreamed up while Bernie Brady works on the biscuit factory line in 1968.
She drums up four other young ones and together they attempt to burst onto the Dublin showband scene. Will the unreliable musicians turn up? Will Assumpta's gippy tummy get the better of her? Can The Mariettas get the crowds on the dance floor? Charming and quirky, The Mariettas is a trip down memory lane to a time when Hucklebuck shoes were compulsory! Starring Stephanie Behan, Andrea Cleary, Margaret O'Doherty, Jennifer Meade and Emma Reinhardt, the show features many of the best loved showband hits from the era performed live by The Mariettas onstage.
