Housing allocation funding of more than €24 million has been made available to local authorities in Mayo this year, according to local TD and Minister for State, Dara Calleary. The housing allocations are being made available under several different programmes with the majority coming from the Social Housing Investment Programme (SHIP ) for 2009.
In total €19.765 million is being made available to Mayo County Council, €1 million to Ballina Town Council, €1.7 million to Castlebar Town Council and €1.8 million to Westport Town Council. The Mayo County Council allocations contains €10 million funding under the SHIP programme combined with additional grants for other schemes.
Speaking about the announcement of funding, Minister Calleary said: “I’m delighted to see this allocation being provided to the people of Mayo. It will go a long way to improving the quality and quantity of social housing around the county and will make a great difference to those people living in social housing or who are on the housing waiting lists.” This funding announcement comes on the back of the €12.9 million that was announced for Parkside in Ballina and the €2.1 million for Parkview Estate in Charlestown which was provided earlier this year. I hope this funding will have a significant effect on the housing available throughout Ballina, Charlestown and the rest of Mayo. More importantly it should have a major impact on the families and residents of these houses. Hopefully it will mean a lot of people throughout Mayo will be getting some very good news in the near future.”
