Jennifer Phelan exhibition at the Ballina Arts Centre

Ballina Arts Centre’s visual art exhibition programme for 2008 returns to more contemporary territory this month – following the exhibition of works by French post-impressionist Camille Lambert in July – with Constructed Drawing, an installation by young Irish artist Jennifer Phelan.

Movement is a strong theme in this work where the inspiration is rhythm, space, flow and form. Dublin-based artist Jennifer works by making relationships between space, colour, movement, and shape. By taking the organic nature of paper she challenges the audience to question their assumptions of certain forms with particular shapes, reflexes and movements.

The process of working with the material is highlighted and demonstrates the variety of ways in which it can be used to create form, both tangible and intangible, as is evident in her Flower installation, which highlights the use of light to create shadows that orchestrate a strong sense of movement.

Jennifer explains: “Drawing is an important part of my practice. It forms a basis for exploring a variety of mark-making techniques in paper and everyday materials. My approach to making is shaped by experimenting with the limitations of the material, the different combinations in which the materials can be used and the growing vocabulary of imagery that has arisen from previous work.”

Constructed Drawing will run until August 30. More information: Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett Street, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Tel: 096 73593, email: [email protected], www.ballinaartscentre.com
