Christmas road safety campaign launched by council

Mayo County Council have managed to secure the support of one of the busiest men in the world this time of the year in a road safety campaign.

Santa Claus is throwing his considerable weight behind the latest campaign to make Ireland’s roads safer as children around the Country to write their Christmas list to Santa.

Parents/teachers can log onto https://www.mayo.ie/en-IE/Your-Council/Services/Road-Safety/Road-Safety-Christmas-Postcard and email their Santa list for their Children direct to the man himself in the north pole , they then receive a road safety message from Santa, they can also download a card or stocking to put on their Christmas tree. This is going to be sent out to all preschools and primary schools.

In the card Santa is advised by one of his helpers: "Santa, make sure you have Rudolf’s lights on and don't forget to fasten your seatbelt."

Noel Gibbons, Mayo County Council road safety officer, who co-ordinated the campaign with Santa Claus, said: "Every year hundreds of children are injured or killed on our roads.

"It is vitally important that we educate our young children of the potential dangers and also their parents and we would like to thank Santa for helping us to get this vital message out there."

Santa Claus replied: "I was delighted to help out – it’s crucial that children take great care on the roads and I am also asking all Mammies and Daddies to play a safe way home if out socialising and most importantly make sure any refreshments you leave out for me are non-alcoholic. If they could also leave of some wipes, mask and hand sanitiser on it, keeping us all safe this very different Christmas."

The cards can be sent on by the children to friends and family to spread the road safety message.
