United look to stretch out their lead at the top

Soccer: Mayo League

Westport United will be fully expected to keep up their 100 per cent record this weekend when they travel to Concannon Park on Sunday afternoon to take on Claremorris.

United made it seven wins from seven last weekend when they saw off the only other unbeaten side up to then - Ballina Town - 2-1 - on their own patch.

That win puts United three points clear at the top of the table of both Ballina Town and Manulla and come the end of the action this weekend, that lead could be stretched out even further as the North Mayo men will be coming calling to Carramore to take on Manulla on Sunday morning.

Mickey Feeney's men showed their quality last weekend, coming from going behind early, after Fabiano swept home from close range after Gary Cunningham had pulled over a fine save from a Benny Lavelle penalty. United did pull themselves level from a Darren Browne penalty after Phil Keegan was fouled by Town keeper Emmett Payton. The decisive score came 15 minutes from time when Cian McAllister finished with aplomb after being played in behind the Ballina defence by a great James McGrath cross.

United will take that 100 per cent record on the road this weekend against a Claremorris side who look like they will be mired in the relegation battle when the division splits in two following the round of games after this one. The South Mayo men were on the end of a pounding from Swinford last weekend - with the East Mayo side running out 5-0 winners - a huge win that saw Swinford move out of the bottom two in the standings.

Ballina Town will be looking to get back to winning ways on Sunday morning when they head to Carramore to take on a Manulla side whose only blot on their copybook this season was a surprise defeat to Ballyhaunis Town. Last weekend they were pushed hard by Super League newboys Glenhest Rovers, who took the lead before half-time through a Cormac Reilly free kick.

But Manulla showed why they are battling out at the top of the table, hitting back through a Sean Morrissey header from an Andrew Shally cross. The winner came from Aiden Dunleavey who fired his from close range to pick up the points for Roger Clarke's side.

It's going to be the game of the weekend in the division when these two meet, with neither side wanting to fall too far behind Westport United, to keep their title chase alive.

Manulla will be facing off against United in the round of games after this one, so a win here would send them into that game, knowing that they will go into the final four rounds of games after the division split level with United on points if they can win their next two league outings.

Ballyheane have been on a pretty good run of form in recent weeks, they currently are sitting in fourth spot in the league and last weekend they picked up another three points with another impressive showing against Ballyglass, where they ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a Nathan Reilly-Doyle hat-trick.

The Quigley Park striker put his side in front just before the break and then he finished off the job late on with another two to seal the win. This weekend they will welcome Glenhest Rovers to their home patch and Ashley Stevenson will be hoping his impressive young side - who are playing a nice brand of football - will pick up another win.

Swinford, who had a huge 5-0 win over Claremorris last weekend to leapfrog Ballyhaunis Town and Glenhest Rovers in the table, will be hosting a Castlebar Celtic side who put a bad run of form behind them to pick up their first win in a while, with a 2-1 come-from-behind win against Ballyhaunis Town last weekend, thanks to goals from Davitt Neary and Jordan Loftus. James Devanney hit four goals for Swinford with Peter McNicholas getting the fifth for Liam Foy's side and they will be hoping Devanney can keep up that run of form when the Hoops' come calling this weekend.

The final game this weekend in the top flight is the meeting of Ballyhaunis Town and Ballyglass in Station Rise. Shane Crinnigan had put Ballyhaunis 1-0 up against Castlebar Celtic last weekend, but they were unable to hold on and find themselves stuck in the bottom two in the table a win over Ballyglass would be a big boost to their chances of staving off relegation at the end of the season.
