Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly has welcomed a further allocation of grant aid to continue restoration work at Glebe House, Ballysakerry, Killala.
This latest announcement of €25,000 comes from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, under its Built Heritage grant scheme.
Since 2016, a total of €107,750 has been grant-aided to Mayo County Council to carry out stabilising and restoration works at this period house, which was the residence of the family of Dr Kathleen Lynn – her father was a minister at the nearby Presbyterian Church in Lisglennon, Killala. Dr Lynn was a veteran of the 1916 rising, and co-founded St Ultan's Hospital for infants in Dublin.
Cllr Munnelly thanked Deirdre Cunningham and Siobhán Sexton from Mayo County Council for their continued work on this important historic site in Mayo, and said that he hoped the site will be accessible to the general public in the future.
He said: "A lot of work has been done to stabilise the house and the outbuildings, including a new roof, and works to the exterior of both the house and the outbuildings.
"When works are eventually completed on this site, I am hoping that it will be possible to make it accessible to the general public, so that anyone who is visiting this area and wishes to find out more about Dr Lynn, will be able to see the house where she was born and learn more about her."
