Mayo County Council's rolling locations for the monthly meeting of the authority since the onset of Covid-19 will include another stop in the coming months.
Westport based independent Cllr Christy Hyland proposed at the September meeting, which took place in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, that the council should head east for one of the next meetings and host it in the new Connacht GAA air dome, located at the provincial council's centre of excellence in Bekan, just outside of Ballyhaunis.
Fine Gael Cllr John Cribben, who is from Ballyhaunis, said he would link in with Connacht GAA secretary, John Prenty, to arrange the taking place of the meeting. Cllr Cribben said: "I would like to congratulate John Prenty and the entire Connacht Council. It is a magnificent structure and has great potential to really put Bekan and the surrounding areas on the map."
Mayo County Council has not been able to meet in its traditional home in the council chamber in Aras an Chontae since the onset of Covid-19, having held meetings in St Mary's Hall in GMIT and recently in the Royal Theatre; however a number of municipal districts including Castlebar and Westport-Belmullet have used the council chamber in the council's headquarters to hold their monthly meetings.
