Big wins and important victories

Soccer: Mayo League

The battle at the top of the table could see big changes overnight - as this paper went to the printers just prior to one of the big games of the Mayo League season taking place - with Westport United hosting Castlebar Celtic in United Park.

The hosts will be looking to shake off their disappointment from last weekend when they were beaten 2-1 in the TP Brennan Connacht Cup final by Salthill Devon. United took the lead in that game through James O'Donnell and led at the break, but the Galway outfit managed to overturn that lead in the second half and win the game, thanks to an own-goal from Darren Browne and a Michael Lee strike with 25 minutes to go.

But back on the home front, United have won three from three in the Super League and sit three points behind league leaders, Ballina Town, who have won four from four. Celtic have also played three games and sit in fourth place, having won two of their three games, going down 5-4 to Ballina Town in their last outing almost a fortnight ago. Should they taste defeat against Westport United, it will leave them six points behind the top two before this weekend's round of games.

In the Super League, last weekend Manulla made it four wins from three with a come from behind 4-1 win at home against Swinford. The visitors took the lead through a Martin Murphy goal, before Manulla came back to see them off thanks to a brace of goals from both Shay Benson and Alan Dunleavy. On Sunday morning Manulla will make the short trip to Celtic Park to take on the Hoops' at 11am, where there is more than just pride at stake in the race to stay in touch with the league leaders.

Swinford will be in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Ballyheane at home - the visitors for that one picked up their first league win of the season last weekend, seeing off Ballyhaunis Town 6-0, in Quigley Park, where Dara Ludden bagged two goals, as did Imoh Atoi with Moo Paw and Nathan Reilly Doyle also hitting the net.

The east Mayo men will be back in action tomorrow evening when they welcome Claremorris to Station Rise at 5.30pm, where both sides will be looking to improve on their one-win-from-four record so far this season. Last weekend Claremorris went down 4-3 at home in Concannon Park to Glenhest Rovers. The Claremorris goals came from Danny Barry, Finian Brady and Rokas Mikuckis with Cathal Chambers, Mark Forrestal, Ciaran McCormack and Zachery Coyne bagging the goals for the visitors.

Rovers will be facing the tough task of stopping the runaway train that is Ballina Town, when they host them on Saturday evening. Town have won four from four and have hit 22 goals over those games. They hammered Ballyglass 9-0 last weekend with Brendan Lavelle fresh from hitting five against Celtic the week before, bagging three more in that win. Dylan McKee hit a brace as did Jamie Cawely with Fabinho Santos and Stephen Moyles also finding the target.

Ballyglass will look to pick up the pieces this weekend when they host Westport United in Keaveney Park on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm.
