The road from Castlebar to Lahardane at the Windy Gap is a death trap according to Mayo County Council and Castlebar Town Council election candidate Cllr Blackie Gavin.
“In the past month alone, two cars and a bus have gone off the road at the Windy Gap and a fatal accident will occur at this section of road if something isn’t done about it immediately,” said Cllr Gavin.
The accident blackspot is on the Castlebar side of the lay-by at the Windy Gap and the emergency services have been called a number of times to assist those who had narrow escapes on this section of road.
“This matter was raised with me on numerous occasions this past week and something must be done about it immediately. I want Mayo County Council to survey this particular section of road and install new warning signs and safety barriers. This section of road where all these accidents occurred needs urgent attention and I am calling on the council to address this matter,” stated Cllr Gavin who said he would raise the issue this coming week with the county manager if the matter was not resolved.
“Someone is going to get killed here and then everyone will ask why it wasn’t addressed. Now is the time to do something about it and I will not stop raising the issue until it is addressed,” he said.
