Soft Day, Thank God: Leah Beggs at the Linenhall
Opening tonight Friday May 1 at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is the evocatively entitled Soft Day, Thank God, a lyrical and atmospheric exhibition of recent paintings by Co Galway-based artist Leah Beggs. Leah’s paintings have always concerned the surrounding landscape. She paints from memory, but is inspired by her ongoing relationship with the Connemara countryside. In this latest body of work, Leah observes that, “Whilst the subject matter is acknowledged as landscape, the way in which it is executed captures the climatic essence that is present at that moment in time. The surrounding landscape and inherent weather is seeping into the subconscious of the work. This latest exhibition is a series of works harnessing this change.”
Soft Day, Thank God will be officially opened by acclaimed Westport poet Ger Reidy tonight at 7.30pm. Come along and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine, and a chance to preview the show and meet the artist. Admission free, all welcome.

Missing communism at the Linenhall
Ines Wurth brings her spellbinding one-woman show I Miss Communism to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday May 13 at 8pm.
It’s a story about freedom of the spirit, not about political systems; it’s about a woman coming of age; it’s about war, religion and God; it’s about Oliver Twist. I Miss Communism is a solo show written and developed by actress and writer Ines Wurth with writing partner and director Mark Soper. It is a true personal account of Ines’ life growing up in Communist Croatia, through the war which ripped Yugoslavia apart, her escape to Los Angeles, and her return to her homeland to face the family and the world which has shaped her life. Voted Best Touring Show in the UK 2006, it was nominated for the Amnesty International Award 2005 and the Writers’ Guild Award. Through music, tears, and great comic timing, this is a story that won’t leave you untouched.
