Celtic and Westport looking for Connacht Cup last four spots

Soccer

Both Castlebar Celtic and Westport United will be hunting for places in the last four of the TP Brennan Connacht Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Last weekend the two sides booked their places in the last eight with wins over Athenry and Tuam Celtic respectively and this weekend Celtic will travel to Galway to take on Salthill Devon, while United will welcome Ballinasloe Town to United Park.

The Super League champions had the toughest time of the two last weekend seeing off Athenry 1-0 in a tightly contested affair on the road. The Galway side had just made it to the final four of the FAI Junior Cup the weekend before so would have gone in as favourites, but a resolute Celtic performance was capped by a stunning Jordan Loftus winner late on to send the Hoops in to the last eight.

Westport United shook off the disappointment of being knocked out of the FAI Junior Cup at the quarter-final stage the weekend previously to put five past Tuam Celtic and set up another mouthwatering last eight tie when they host Ballinasloe Town on Sunday at the foot of Croagh Patrick.

Jesper Frisch hit their first after being found by a good cross from Peter Corcoran on the half-hour mark, they doubled their lead early in the second half when Corcoran this time was on the end of a cross to send the ball to the net. A Mark McDonagh free kick a few minutes later had United three clear. Tuam did pull a goal back from the penalty spot through Colm Quinn - but there was no need to panic as Corcoran got his second of the day not long after and the scoring was wrapped up by a Eoin Conway strike for goal number five.

There are two Mayo sides in action in the TP Brennan Shield last eight this weekend too, with both Glenhest Rovers and Kiltimagh-Knock United looking to make the last four of the competition. Rovers who are newly promoted to the Super League this season will be hosting Ballymote Celtic on Sunday. Rovers won their third round tie a fortnight ago seeing off Manulla B 2-0. They were in domestic cup action last weekend where Claremorris put four past them in round two of the Calor Gas Super Cup and they will be hoping for different outcome this weekend.

Kiltimagh-Knock United will make the short trip across the border to Ballaghaderreen on Sunday afternoon in hopes of coming home with a final four spot. They had a 5-0 win over Moyne Villa in the last round and will be hoping to keep up that form on Sunday afternoon.

There was action in the Calor Gas Premier Cup last weekend where Westport United B's 5-0 win over Claremorris B set up a last eight clash against Castlebar Celtic B this weekend. Partry Athletic booked their place in the last eight with a 4-1 win over Fahy Rovers and they will be in quarter final action in the coming weeks.

Nine of the best from Castlebar Town

Castlebar Town had a 9-3 win over Conn Rangers in the Mayo Women's League last weekend. The goals came from a hat-trick from Anna Tuohy, two from Melissa Devaney and single strikes from Danielle Caldwell, Belinda Patterson, Kathleen Conway and a Chloe Morley penalty. The Conn Rangers goal from a brace by Leah McHugh one of them from the spot and a Alva Munnelly strike.

Manulla put four past Kiltimagh-Knock United in a 4-1 win, Saibh Larkin struck twice with Emma Cosgrave and Aoife Brennan getting the other - with Shauna Golden getting the goal for Kilitimagh-Knock United. Tomorrow evening at 7pm Castlebar Town will host Kiltimagh-Knock United, while Manulla will travel to Conn Rangers.
