Mayo man to contest Athlone local election

Castlebar native Alan Shaw has put his name in the ring for the Town Council election in Athlone, Co Westmeath. Alan was born in Snugboro and is son of Matt and Kathleen Shaw.

Alan was educated in the Athlone Institute of Technology and later joined Russell Brennan Keane, Chartered Accountants also based in Athlone, where he has worked for the past 14 years. He became active in local politics eight years ago when he joined Young Fine Gael and later became a member of Athlone branch in the town.

Now actively involved in the community, Alan has decided to contest the town council election for Fine Gael on June 5. The party presently holds two seats on the town council, with nine seats up for grabs in all. According to Mr Shaw, with the degree of bad will towards the Government since the recent sequence of Budget cuts, there is a huge opportunity for Fine Gael to become the largest political force on all local councils including Athlone.

Alan believes that the strong leadership shown by Enda Kenny, together with a front bench team unmatched by any other party, has placed Fine Gael centre stage nationally.

The stronghold of Mary O’Rourke in Athlone will provide a serious challenge and the Mayo man will not be found wanting when it comes to hard work, campaigning and knocking on doors.
