Westport United will look to shake off the disappointment of being knocked out of the FAI Junior Cup last weekend when on Sunday they host Tuam Celtic in the fifth round of the Connacht Cup in United Park.
It was heartbreak for United last Sunday, when Dublin outfit Oliver Bond Celtic pipped them 2-1 after extra-time in the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup.
A goal from Jimmy McHugh a minute into the second half of extra time was enough to separate the sides at the full time whistle. The Dublin side started the game brightly and pushed themselves into the lead after half-an-hour when Sean McManus finished past Gary Cunningham.
United got themselves back into the game and before the break and their pressure paid off when Peter Corcoran finished to level it up after being picked out by Phil Keegan. Both sides pushed in the second half and created chances to win the game in normal time but they could not be separated at the end of 90 minutes, meaning the game went to extra-time.
Castlebar Celtic will be on the road to east Galway on Sunday where they will be looking to take the scalp of Athenry to book their spot in the last eight - their last game in this competition came way back on the first day of March when they saw off Cliffony Celtic 4-1 after extra time on the road. They had the weekend off last weekend having kick-started their season with a 2-1 loss to Ballina Town in the first round of the Super Cup a fortnight ago. Having won the league title in such impressive style last term, Celtic will be looking to get back to winning ways this weekend and will fancy their chances of having a real cut at this competition.
There were a number of Mayo teams in Connacht Cup action last weekend and there was no success for any of the three teams from Mayo involved. Manulla came closest to picking up a victory but they were pipped 4-3 after extra time by Sligo league champions, Carbury.
Gerry Canavan gave Manulla the lead from the penalty spot after just a minute, they held that lead until Ryan McManus equalised five minutes before the break. Carbury went ahead early in the second half through Gary Finan and they looked like they would hold on for the win, until Chris Maughan struck to send the game into extra time.
The Sligo side struck the next two goals through Gareth Kelly and Aaron Murry to put their side 4-2 and looking good, Gerry Canavan pulled one back for Manulla before the end - but it was too little too late for the Carramore outfit.
Ballyglass were put out of the competition by Ballinasloe Town who ran out 3-0 winners thanks to goals from Callum McKelvey, Mark Duffy and Ryan Burke, while Conn Rangers were eliminated 3-1 on the road by Castlerea Celtic. Eoin Prendergast put Conn ahead early on, but Celtic hit the next three goals to progress to the next round of the competition.
The draw for the next round of the competition was made this week and if Castlebar Celtic get through they will take on Salthill Devon on the road in the quarter-final, while a home clash against Ballinasloe Town will be Westport United's prize for victory.
