Sinn Féin's Charlestown based councillor, Gerry Murray, was elected to the position of Cathaoirleach of the Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District at the district's AGM, which took place in the Cultural Centre in Swinford on Wednesday.
The Sinn Féin councillor received the backing of the five Fine Gael councillors in the ten-seat district, seeing off Fianna Fáil's Cllr Michael Smyth to take the position. The leas Cathaoirleach position was filled by Fine Gael Cllr Neil Cruise, who also was elected on a vote of 6-4. Cllr Murray takes over the position from Fine Gael Cllr Tom Connolly who held the position since last year's local elections.
