Fianna Fail’s Cllr Sean Carey was elected as the chairperson of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District at the district's Annual General Meeting, which took place in the Mayo County Council chamber on Tuesday.
The first term county councillor was elected unopposed at the meeting after being proposed by his party colleague Cllr Brendan Mulroy and was seconded by Cllr Paul McNamara. There was no counter proposal put forward from the Fine Gael side of the house who gave their backing to Cllr Carey’s election to the position which he takes over from Cllr Chirsty Hyland. The Leas Cathaoirleach position was filled by Cllr Brendan Mulroy, who was proposed by Cllr Hyland and seconded by Cllr McNamara.
