Flynn calls for remote participation at meetings

Fine Gael Cllr Peter Flynn has called for the possibility of elected members being able to take part in Municipal District meetings through telephonic means - if they are not able to attend in the future.

The Westport based councillor raised the idea at the June meeting of the Westport-Belmullet meeting this week. Cllr Flynn said he was unable to attend the May meeting of the district due to Covid-19 and while he was able to listen in, he was unable to take part in the debate. He acknowledged that statutory issues could only be dealt with by the members in the room during a meeting.

Director of Services for Mayo County Council, Catherine McConnell, said that the council was awaiting national guidance on the issue.
