Deere calls for HSA to inspect building sites left unsecured during lockdown

Castlebar Fine Gael Councillor Ger Deere has called on the Health and Safety Authority (HSA ) to carry out inspections on building sites during the current lockdown.

Cllr Deere issued the call following an issue in a residential area of Castlebar, where he said contractors working on a house stopped work when the lockdown came into place and left the site totally unsecured which was very irresponsible.

He went on to say: "Given the fact that so many young people are off school at the moment these type of exposed sites are a magnet in particular for young people to explore. leaving them open to serious injuries or death.

"I have contacted the HSA and Mayo County Council in relation to this matter and have also requested the HSA who have responsibility in this regard to carry out an audit on all such sites during this current lockdown. I would also appeal to contractors to make sure their sites are secure.

"Also if any member of the public notices such unsecured sites in their area to contact the Health and Safety Authority on (1890 ) 289389 or indeed myself at [email protected]."
