Fine Gael Cllr Jarlath Munnelly has called for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Main Street in Ballycastle. Cllr Munnelly told the monthly meeting of the Ballina Municipal District that the street in Ballycastle was very wide and it was not easy for people to cross and the installation of a pedestrian crossing would be a huge benefit for the people living and businesses in the town.
His motion was seconded by Fianna Fail Cllr Annie May Reape who also questioned how much it would cost to install one. Senior Engineer for Mayo County Council, Teresa Durkin, told Cllr Munnelly that the area architect had included a pedestrian crossing in his plans for the town, but it would not be possible to construct one this year and it would be in a year or two. In her response to Cllr Reape’s question on the cost, Durkin told the elected members that normal cost for a pedestrian crossing was €30,000 but owing to the size of the street and the type of design, the architect assessed the council would be looking for in the region of €50,000 to carry out such a project.
