Beach lifeguarding season 2020 commences this weekend

Mayo County Council has confirmed that the beach lifeguarding season will begin this Bank Holiday Weekend, with lifeguard teams on duty from 12pm, Saturday, May 30 on official beaches.

Mayo’s official life-guarded beaches are: Keem Bay, Keel Beach, Silver Strand - Doogort, Mulranny Beach, Ross Strand, Killala, Carrowniskey Strand, Carrowmore Beach, Old Head Beach and Bertra Beach.

The lifeguarding season runs from May 30 to August 30, scheduled as follows: June 2020: Every Saturday, Sunday, and Bank Holiday Monday from 12pm to 6.30pm; July and August: Every day from 12pm to 6.30pm.

Beaches can be visited only if they are within the 5km radius of home, until Monday, June 8, when Phase 2 of the Government Roadmap for Re-opening will commence.

The council wishes to remind patrons that the two metre social distancing rule must be observed by all, and this is also the case in any interaction with lifeguards. They ask everyone who will visit our beaches, to respect the instructions of the lifeguards and only swim within the bathing zone designated by flags.

A simple reminder for all, please check what flags the lifeguards on duty are flying before considering going swimming: (1 ) The yellow/red flag is flying, it is safe to swim; (2 ) The red flag is flying, it is unsafe to swim.

Finally, Mayo County Council implores everyone to keep our beaches clean and tidy, by always bringing your litter home with you.
