Potential of 30 new jobs to be created in old Volex plant in Castlebar

The elected members of Mayo County Council have, in principal, given their approval to the local authority to enter into a leasing agreement with a Ballinrobe based company to take over the old Volex plant on the Breaffy Road in Castlebar.

Walsh Group, Kilmaine Road, Ballinrobe, has sought to lease approximately two thirds of the 3,573 square meters facility from the council for the next six years, with the option to buy the building after that.

The new facility is expected to have the potential to create 30 new jobs, the elected members were told - Walsh Group are proposing to establish a mechanical engineering offsite and fabrication facility in the building.

As part of the agreement, Walsh Group will invest around €1.2 million into the facility to bring it up to their needs and have been offered lease with a rent of €10,000 for the first year and €20,000 for years two to six - with a full commercial rent being applicable after the end of year six - or the option to buy the facility off the council for €570,000. There will also be a break clause inserted into the lease after four years and nine months, with a three month notice period if the tenant opts to extend the lease.
