Aontú representative for Mayo, Paul Lawless, a teacher, has moved to reassure students in light of concerns over the leaving certificate and college places.
Lawless said: "I have been working closely with many third-level students and have been in direct communication with the respective institutions since the closures. Colleges and Universities have shown a huge level of understanding and flexibility for their students, offering a range of practical measures to ensure students can proceed with their studies.
"The tone I am getting from my dealings with college authorities suggests that they genuinely have students' concerns at heart and will do everything in their power to ease the stress. Undoubtedly, the Leaving Cert Class of 2020 remains one of the most adversely affected groups of young people in the State during this time.
"Students and parents were again left frustrated with the lack of clarity following the Taoiseach’s speech last week, in which he did not address issues surrounding the Leaving Cert. Students still don’t know whether the previously announced two weeks of class time will happen before their exams.
"There is no need for students to lose sleep over the exams - but do stay focused and keep studying. While it is extremely difficult for you, like every Leaving Cert class, you will be judged by the standard set by your peers.
"The points system and third-level entry are largely based on supply and demand, meaning the points required for your course may reduce. It is also likely that the number of international students will be less, and therefore greater places will be available.
"It is important to remember that everyone is in the same boat, if everyone does poorly in the exam then the points will come down. I am doing free online Maths lessons for Leaving Cert Students for both Higher and Ordinary Level.
