The members of the committee paid tribute to the late Sean Dunleavy, who was a planning officer with Mayo County Council. Cllr Al McDonnell led the tributes, saying: “I found him a very strong and direct man. If he made his mind up that was it, he was very fair, though, and didn’t take long to make his mind up. He was able to give a very fair assessment of a situation very quickly.”
Cllr Johnny Mee told the meeting: “ He was a very nice man who had a very wry sense of humour, he had a vast knowledge of many areas on a range of matters. He was a great GAA man and I don’t think he missed too many Mayo games over the years.”
County Manger Des Mahon, who was attending the meeting, also paid tribute and thanked the members for their words saying: “He was very clear on the way he thought. He was involved in every thing that was Irish, especially the GAA. He had a very short retirement period of 10 years or so, but he was a very brave man right until the end. I wish to extend my sympathies to his wife and his family.” Cllrs Cyril Burke and Paddy McGuinness also expressed their wishes to be associated with the remarks.
Cllr Burke also asked the committee to remember the late Con Lavin of Balla, who died last Thursday. Cllr Burke said: “Con was one of the leading lights in Balla Golf Club and he was a great community man and he will be missed greatly. I sympathise with his family and friends”.
