This year, Mayo Day, the day that is unique to the county, will go ahead on Saturday, May 2.
A spokesperson for the event said: "Mayo Day is always special, but this Mayo Day will be even more special, given the unique situation in which we find ourselves.
"For the past six years we have flown the green and red flag with pride; pride in our county, pride in our people, pride in our place and pride in our heritage.
"In this extraordinary year of 2020 we will again fly the flag with pride and with hope. We will again reach out to our communities and our diaspora, scattered as they are across the world, to unite our people at a time of global crisis.
"We will not be coming together at public events of celebration but we will be using technology to celebrate the spirit of a resilient people at this time. Mayo people have survived through centuries of adversity and this Mayo Day we will have an opportunity to reach out, to link up, to support each other and to mark that incredible Mayo Spirit which never recognises defeat!
"Never was that Mayo Spirit more needed! Never was that Mayo Sense of Community faced with such a global challenge. Never was Mayo Sense of Inclusion so vital to our collective wellbeing. This Mayo Day is a chance to be part of the global Mayo family re-union and it promises to be something really special!"
Cathoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Brendan Mulroy, added: "Mayo Day has been a fantastic initiative that has highlighted the unique people and place that is our County. While we won’t be celebrating by coming together for events this year, we are looking forward to Mayo Day bringing our people across the globe together for one day. Now more than ever our coming together is so significant."
Chief Executive of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, added: "Mayo Day has always been about celebrating our people and place. While we will not be physically meeting in our communities this year to celebrate this year, technology and Mayo.ie will enable us all to be part of a moment of unity, of defiance, of commemoration and of hope for the future. It is probably the most important Mayo Day to date and circumstances which we hopefully will not see again.
