Claremorris Fianna Fáil candidate Gerard McHale has outlined four actions which Mayo County Council can take to ensure that Claremorris town centre does not further decline.
Mr McHale has called on the council to take swift action to stop local businesses from closing. “Over the last number of months a number of businesses around the town centre have closed down, and a number more are currently under severe pressure to stay in business. I am calling on Mayo County Council to take swift action to ensure the survival of our town centre, which is the heart of our community,” said Mr McHale.
The four actions include making the town centre more pedestrian friendly by installing raised pedestrian crossings and banning heavy goods vehicles from the town centre. He has suggested changing the current “inadequate” parking arrangements to at least give shoppers a short period of time free of charge to pop into their local shops. He has asked the local authority to review the current level of rates being charged to give businesses an opportunity to survive, and he has called for the fast tracking of cleaning up a number of unsafe areas, including the laneway known as Hanley’s Arch.
