The funeral of Fr John McCormack, Parish Priest of Breaffy, Castlebar, will take place tomorrow, Saturday, March 28, at 12 noon in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Roundfort, with burial afterwards in Roundfort Cemetery.
Fr McCormack passed away peacefully on Tuesday in St Theresa's Nursing Unit, SMA House in Cork - the late Fr McCormack served as a priest in Irishtown, Moylough, Philippines and in Liberia before taking up his post as parish priest in in Breaffy. He celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination as a priest last December.
He was predeceased by his parents Patrick and Mary and is survived by his family, Una Roman (New Hampshire ), Mary Moran (Kilmaine ), Michael (Roundfort ), Pat (Manchester ), George (Wokingham ), Kathleen (Cricklewood ), Seamus (Claremorris ), brothers in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, relatives, neighbours, parishioners and friends at home and abroad and his confreres in the Society of African Missions.
Due to the HSE, Government and Church guidelines, the funeral at all stages will be strictly private for family only, the Funeral Mass will be streamed on the Roundfort Robeen Carras Parish Facebook page.
Paying tribute to the late Fr McCormack, Breaffy GAA Club said: "Father John was a wonderful supporter of Breaffy GAA Club and the wider community in Breaffy. He will be sadly missed by us all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his congregation at this sad time."
St Gerald's College, Castlebar, where he served as a Chaplain, also passed on their condolences, saying: "It is with great sadness that our school community learned of the death of Fr John McCormack, RIP. A wonderful Chaplain, he introduced the Peer 4 Peer Programme to our school and the Parish of Castlebar. He was hugely supportive of the participation of the youth in the church; especially in Breaffy. He was a good friend of our staff and his presence in our school was always encouraging, reassuring and prayerful. May his gentle soul rest in peace."
