28-year-old man arrested following €250,000 drugs seizure in Claremorris

A 28-year-old man appeared before Castlebar District Court yesterday morning in relation to an investigation following the seizure of €250,000 worth of drugs, following a search operation in Claremorris on Wednesday.

Gardaí from the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit, assisted by Claremorris Community Engagement Team and the Armed Support Unit, executed a search warrant under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977, at an industrial premises in Claremorris town.

An industrial unit was converted into a grow house for large scale production. During the course of the search, over 300 cannabis plants were seized with an estimated street value of approximately €250,000 (pending analysis ).

During the search, a male aged 28 years, was arrested under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and was detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Mayo. Investigations are ongoing.

Community Engagement Superintendent Gabriel Moran said: "The impact of drugs on families and the cost of paying to support a drugs habit feeds into crime levels and fear in families in the county.

"Our community and also those involved in crime should know, that despite our clear focus on supporting communities as we address the challenges of Covid-19, Gardaí in Mayo and across the country will continue to investigate crime and target those selling drugs in our communities.
