In light of the ongoing Covid-19 related restrictions, Mayo County Council have confirmed that all playground and Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA ) facilities throughout the county are now closed.
All other outdoor recreational facilities, including greenways and walkways, remain open to the public. Mayo County Council have urged the public, however, to observe Social Distancing and exercise caution when using these facilities.
Parks Superintendent with Mayo County Council, Peter Gill, confirmed the closures sayin: "On the advice of the HSE, and in line with government measures, Mayo County Council have taken the decision to close all playgrounds and Multi Use Games Areas.
"This decision was taken to avoid situations where children are interacting with each other. The public need to continue using social distancing for the foreseeable future and it is hoped that closing these facilities will assist in further limiting the spread of the virus.”
"We endeavour to keep the public updated with any disruption to our services through local media and Mayo County Council media channels.
"We would strongly advise the public to follow the guidance issued by our health professionals in relation to COVID-19. In addition, we would encourage the public to watch out for each other particularly the vulnerable in our society.
The Cathaoirleach of the local authority Cllr Brendan Mulroy said today that: “Unfortunately due to the non compliance with social distancing all playgrounds and skateparks in Mayo are closed to the public as of today.
“This is not an easy decision for the council to take but the general public have inundated the council with complaints about large gathering at these areas in recent days.
“Stay safe and keep your distance from each other. We and our loved ones only get one chance at this life . Thanks to everyone who has contacted me on this matter.”
Mayo TD Dara Calleary also supported the decision saying it was the right thing to do and he had been contacted by a number of people about the issue over the recent days.
