The community spirit shown by ordinary members in the public in giving their time to help out the most vulnerable has been praised by the Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Brendan Mulroy.
Speaking to the Mayo Advertiser today the Westport based Cathaoirleach said: "We have a great great circle of support in Westport where people are doing stuff, we have so many people helping out it is not a drain on everybody at the minute."
As for advice for people he said: "The best thing to get out to people is to stay safe and not panic, there are people there to help at the end of the phone.
"It's all about everyone working together, listening to the proper advice and staying safe - a good starting point for people is their local councillor who will be able to assist them and direct them in the right direction
"There are so many people and organisations that have put themselves forward to help it's a great thing. If there was ever a case of why people want to live in Ireland and stay in Ireland this is the proof of it - every one is just there to help out each other as best they can.
Foxford based Cllr Neil Cruise who has been organising a list of volunteers to help out in his area said he has a huge response to his call saying: "It has gone very well, we have had a huge response, the willingness of people to get out there and help the most vulnerable and people in need is shining through at the minute.
"I would say we have well over 100 volunteers who have put their hands up to help out and we are trying to get all that organised now and out to the areas."
Cruise urged people to continue to check the proper information channels when it comes to keeping updated on the lasted news on the COVID-19 outbreak saying: "People are worried for their own safety and their loved ones, they are apprehensive I would strongly urge people to pay notice to the proper sources rather than the daft stuff is circulating around the place and it is creating issues, it is stirring people up and doing no good."
