Michael Ring, the Minister for Rural and Community Development, has announced €20,460 in LEADER Programme funding for Cumann Seoda Mhuigheo Thuaidh in Crossmolina to support the creation of a heritage publication on old Irish folklore.
The publication, which draws heavily on the 1930s National Schools Folklore Collection, will highlight local folklore and provide information on piseogs, healing remedies and curses.
Minister Ring said: "I am delighted to announce support for this publication through my Department’s LEADER Programme. This is a brilliant opportunity to capture and document our local folklore and how it informed people’s response to medical issues.
"Many of us will have heard of some of these remedies from our parents and grandparents. I’m delighted that this is all being captured in one book which will provide a valuable insight into life in Mayo and rural Ireland in days gone by.
"Today’s allocation brings to almost €900,000 the amount of Mayo LEADER projects which I have announced in the last few weeks."
Minister Ring concluded: "LEADER funding provides invaluable support to a wide variety of community and enterprise initiatives in Mayo. I have now announced over €7 million in funding for 163 LEADER funded projects in the county."
