Castlebar are heading to the junior cup final

Rugby: Connacht Junior League

Last Sunday saw Castlebar book their place in the Connacht Junior Cup final for the first time since 1996.

The Cloondeash based outfit saw off Monivea 13-10 after extra time on Sunday to set up a showdown with Connemara in the Sportsground in Galway on Sunday, March 22.

They got over the line thanks to a try from Matthew Staunton and two penalties from Barry Walsh, with his second penalty coming right at the death, to win the game for Castlebar.

Their attentions will now turn to the league this weekend when they host Sligo in the top division of the junior rugby in the province. Castlebar are ten points clear and one place ahead of their guests in the standings at the minute; when the sides met in the league earlier this season Sligo ran out 30-18 winners in Yeats County.

Also in action this weekend are Westport, who currently sit in fourth place in the table and the Bulls will be hosting second placed Creggs in Carrowholly. Creggs won the reverse fixture 17-7 in October and they currently sit 12 points in front of Westport in the league standings at the moment; the Bulls last league game saw them go down 7-0 on the road against league leaders Connemara.

In the J1B this weekend, Ballinrobe will look to put the disappointment of their 31-19 loss at home to Connemara in the semi-final of the Junior Cup last Sunday to one side when they host Dunmore in The Green. The south Mayo men sit in sixth place in the table at the minute, 24 points behind their visitors on Sunday and when they last met in the league - the north Galway side ran out 25-19 winners.

In the third tier of junior rugby in the province Ballyhaunis will be looking to keep their noses out in front at the top of the table. The east Mayo men currently sit in first place in the standings and are four points in front of second placed Creggs, who are just four points off the Doctors Road outfit. Ballyhaunis' last league outing saw them 15-5 winners over Corrinthians - in the reverse fixture played late last year Ballyhaunis and Tuam played out a 3-3 draw.
