Independent Cllr Johno O'Malley has asked the executive of the West Mayo Municipal District whether there are any changes to be made to the amount of land people need to own to get planning permission in rural areas.
Speaking at the February meeting of the district, he said:"This is a question about planning permission. I have been told that in a rural area, from next October, you are going to have to own 27 acres of land before you can get planning permission. Now if that is right or wrong I don't know, but I do know that something is afoot on it, because I have been contacted by three different people and it has happened in another county outside of this county and it is coming in that you have to have own a substantial amount of land. To get a herd number you have to have seven acres of land, but they said you have to own 27 acres." He was told by the council executive that they were not aware of any such rule.
