The elected members of the West Mayo Municipal District have taken the first steps to changing the speed limit in two different locations along the N59 from Westport to Mulranny.
They have approved sending out to public consultation a proposal to increase the speed limit on the N59 at the Kilmeena, where a road realignment project is currently being completed, from 80km per hour to 100 km per hour.
This is to bring it in line with the current speed limit in situ on sections of the road that have already been improved under the realignment project. The members also approved the extending of the 60km speed limit 150m west of where it is on the Mulranny side of Newport, to take in a band bend.
