Mustangs make it eight straight

Basketball: Lonleitros League; Mustangs 68 Torpedos 30

With all their away games played, Mustangs played the first of their three week run of home games on Tuesday night last. On a night of crazy weather Longford Torpedos travelled to De la Salle to fulfil their fixture against the undefeated Mustangs.

Louise Harte won the tip off jump and Sinead Hughes opened the Mustangs’ scoring account almost immediately. It was a blazing opening first quarter for Mustangs with Siobhan Kilkenny scoring a massive 12 points for the home side. Torpedos were denied form by Mustangs’ hard working defence with Hughes getting numerous steals from the top of the key and the travelling side only managed a meagre two points for the quarter. The quarter finished 25-2.

The remainder of the quarters were played with five in five out for the Mustangs, with everyone getting equal court time. Hughes contributed a further six points in the second quarter and Mustangs never really came under pressure from the Longford side, albeit that there were scoring lulls in the second and third. Mustangs led 38-12 at half time.

The third and fourth quarters were controlled for Mustangs and they scored a further 30 points by the final whistle. For the fifth consecutive game all Mustangs players contributed to the score line, which is no mean feat. The final score board read 68-30 points to Mustangs with two home games left to play in the 2019/20 season. Mustangs’ next game is a rescheduled home against Longford Falcons next Tuesday March 3 in De la Salle with 8.15pm tip off. All support welcome.

Mustangs’ scorers: Siobhan Kilkenny 21pts, Anita Hoban 4pts, Cliodhna Mac Cabe 2pts, Maria Hall 2pts, Claire Nolan 4pts, Indre Majauskaite Gusciuviene 9pts, Karen Mulherin 5pts, Sinead Hughes 12pts, Louise Harte 8pts, Fiona Feeney 1pt.
