Major refurbishment project for Ballina Town Centre

Plans were announced last Friday for a significant redevelopment project which will see €10m invested in Ballina Town Centre. The project will involve input and investment by both public and private sectors and will include:

A complete makeover and expansion of their existing town centre store by Tesco Ireland, the development of a new carpark in lands acquired by Mayo County Council with a new street linking Market Sq. and Pearse Street and a major new commercial and residential block which will be the subject of a design and develop competition.

The overall project will dovetail with the ongoing work on the Military Barracks Innovation Hub and will allow for a major upgrade of the public realm in the Market square. The renovation of the existing Tesco unit will add significantly to the retail offering in Ballina

Chairman of the Ballina Municipal District, Cllr Michael Loftus welcomed the announcement saying: "This is a big boost to the town of Ballina, and it will certainly play an exciting role in the redevelopment of a key area in the centre of our town."

Peter Hynes, Chief Executive of Mayo County Council said: "A lot of hard work and discussion has gone into the store upgrade and the regeneration of Market Square and it is great to see the plans move to the next stage. Taken together with the work underway on the Mary Robinson Centre the future for Ballina looks very bright."
