Mayo County Council is working on a plan to improve bus shelters around the county and hopes to have some progress to report to the next meeting of the Roads Strategic Policy Group of the council.
Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke raised the issue at a meeting of the committee this week, wondering where the council was in regards to progress on a plan. He was informed by director of services for the council, Tom Gilligan, that the council has identified there are 81 bus stops around the county and is liaising with the municipal districts in the county to report back on each stop. He also informed the meeting that they had signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Transport Authority in relation to the necessity for shelters in a number of areas and were waiting for the authority to countersign it. He went to say that the plan is to develop a number of shelters at bus stops and to have wheelchair accessible bus stops in each of the major towns in the county.
This news was welcomed by the councillors, with the chairperson of the committee, Cllr Damien Ryan, stating that in his own area, which was a big tourism area, 'it beggared belief that there wasn't shelters, but this was a good step and while they all won't be done at once - once a plan is in place they should get through them with the different areas identified worked through on the basis of priority'.
