Mayo sides face top two in top flight

Rugby: Connacht Junior League

The two top junior sides in Mayo will take on the top two teams in the Connacht J1A division as the league enters its final few rounds of games.

Westport currently sit three points in front of their local rivals in the standings at present after both sides have played 11 games each, the weather put paid to both clubs' outings last weekend, with Westport's home game against Creggs and Castlebar's clash in Cloondeash against Sligo postponed.

This weekend Castlebar will be on the road east to take on a Creggs side who currently sit in second place in the table. In their last outing four weeks ago, Castlebar's good run of form came to a surprising end when they were turned over 31-14 by Buccanners in Athlone in round 11. When the teams met in the league in round two last September in Castlebar, the visitors went home with the points thanks to a 17-10 win.

Westport will head into their home game against league leaders Connemara on the back of two good wins in their last two outings, seeing off Sligo 17-10 on the road and backing that up with a big 29-7 win over Buccanneers in the midlands. When the Bulls made the trip to west Galway in round two back in September they were beaten 33-15 and they will be hoping to overturn that result in Carrowholly this weekend.

In the Connacht J1B division, Ballinrobe will be looking to pick up their fourth league win of the season when they make the trip to Loughrea this weekend. The south Mayo side have had a great run in the Junior Cup this season, but are still bubbling about near the foot of the table in the league. In their last league game four weeks ago, they picked up league win number three with a 22-17 victory over Corrib at home. Ballina currently sit at the bottom of the division, but are only two points behind fifth placed Galwegians. This weekend they will be on the road to Headford to take on Corrib, who are currently in third place in the standings 12 points in front of the north Mayo men.

In the J1C division - east Mayo outfit Ballyhaunis will be looking to keep up their drive towards the title this weekend. At the moment, Ballyhaunis are sitting on top of the table four points clear of their nearest challengers Creggs, but the second placed side do have a game in hand in this very tight division. This weekend Ballyhaunis will be at home to Tuam - who they played out an extremely low scoring 3-3 draw in the early rounds of the league. Ballyhaunis head into this game on the back of two good wins, seeing off Corinthians in back-to-back encounters 36-12 and 15-15 to push them to the top of the table.
