Mustangs run stampede over the Dragons; Mustangs 72 Drumlish Dragons 33

Basketball: Lonleitros League

With only seven available players for the last away game of the season, Mustangs hit the road east for Longford. Storm Ciara was looming, however, it didn’t deter this bunch of determined ladies.

Mustangs won the jump, however, the minutes that followed were unusually chaotic and the first score of the game came in only the third minute, from player-coach Siobhan Kilkenny, on the free throw line. It was far from a polished quarter for the Mustangs, however they finished the quarter up 14 points to 10 with impressive leadership by Kilkenny and Louise Harte both claiming six points each in the quarter.

The second quarter saw a more expected fluidity to the Mustangs’ game. Kilkenny and Sinead Hughes were stealing ball at the top of the key while the post players were cleaning up under the boards both offensively and defensively. Harte amassed seven points in this quarter with Fiona Feeney and Indre Majauskaite-Guscuiviene opening their scoring account in the quarter. The half time score was 37-19 to Mustangs.

The third quarter was the closest display to defensive perfection for Mustangs. Drumlish Dragons only managed to score two points in this quarter versus the 18 from Mustangs. Maria Hall hustled well, getting a couple of steals and her fitness level was obvious as she chased the court alongside Kilkenny on fast breaks. The scoreline at the end of the third quarter was 55-21.

Mustangs rounded off the game in cruise control with Kilkenny hitting her second three point score of the game and tallying nine points. For the fourth game in a row, all Mustangs players contributed to the scoresheet and every player more or less shared equal court time. The final score read 72-33 to Mustangs.

Mustangs’ final three games are at home with the next match featuring against Longford Torpedos on Tuesday, February 25, with 8.15pm tip off in De la Salle.

Mustangs’ scorers: Siobhan Kilkenny 22pts, Maria Hall 6pts, Indre Majauskaite-Guscuiviene 4pts, Karen Mulherin 14pts, Sinead Hughes 2pts, Louise Harte 19pts, Fiona Feeney 5pts.
