If you are in need of some light relief and entertainment after weeks of election talk, then the hilarious musical - 9 to 5 - will provide the perfect antidote.
Achill Musical and Dramatic Society are proud to present its production of the hilarious - 9 to 5: The Musical - which will take place in Coláiste Acla, Dooega on Achill Island.
The opening performance will take place on Valentine’s night - an ideal gift for your better half - on Friday, February 14 at 8pm and will be followed by two further shows; a matinee on Saturday, February 15 at 2.30pm and the closing show later on Saturday evening at 8pm. Based on the seminal 1980 hit movie of the same name, 9 to 5:The Musical, features music and lyrics by country music superstar Dolly Parton. Set in the late 1970s, it centres on the downtrodden working lives of three women, Violet, Judy, and Doralee.
They all work at Consolidated Industries, which is presided over by the sexist, lecherous, and pompous, Franklin Hart Jnr. This is the Achill Musical and Dramatic Society’s (AMDS ) fourth musical and promises to have audiences in awe of the performances of the local Achill talent taking to the stage. Taking the leading roles are Kate Callaghan (Doralee ), Siobhán Campbell (Violet ) and making her AMDS debut is Caragh McGinty (Judy ).
The three ladies are superb in their roles as the downtrodden female employees of the sexist and egotistical boss, played with distinction by Stephen McNulty. Elizabeth Kilbane plays Roz Keith, Hart’s busybody admin assistant who is despised by all her co-workers and infatuated by Hart’s position of power in the company.
Chairman of AMDS, Anton McNulty, said the entire cast was looking forward to putting on 9 to 5 and promised lots of laughs for the audience. “For the last number of months the cast have been working hard and as the opening show approaches we can’t wait to get on stage. 9 to 5 is one of the funniest musicals around and that comedy is one of the reason we choose it. We had some great laughs in rehearsals and I’m sure the audience will be laughing as loud during the show and going home having seen a brilliant show,” he said.
As well as the popular hit ‘9 to 5’, the musical contains an array of songs including ‘Around Here’, ‘One of the Boys’, ‘Backwards Barbie’, ‘I Just Might’ and Heart to Hart’. Dolly may even be making an appearance so watch this space!
The production team of Sharon Lavelle (Director ), Phil Duffy (Musical Director ) and Jason Guthrie (Choreographer ) have returned for another year while the band include a number of young Achill musicians under the tutelage of Padraig McCaul.
