New Year competitions swing into life

The New Year has seen competitions swing back into life around the county.

Balla

The Christmas scramble competition was won by the trio of Stephen Minogue, Padraig Cresham and Jimmy Sheridan with a score of 41, second place went to the team of Bob Leggett, Aodan MacSuibhne and Aine MhicSuibhne and third place was claimed by the grouping of Mick Mellett, PJ Brett and James Waldron. The gents' Christmas Hamper competition was won by Martin Moylette with Darren Glee in second place and Jimmy Walsh in third spot. The ladies' competition was won by Julie Loftus with a score of 33pts, Geraldine Evan's finished in second place and Aine Mhic Suibne finished in third place.

Ballinrobe

The Winter Alliance Competition category one section was won by Daire Faherty with a score of 33pts, second place went to Sean Mulryan who finished a point behind Faherty and third place went to Alan Sammon. The category two winner was Brian Fallon with category three win going to Joe Sheridan. The ladies' stableford competition was won by Breege Jennings with the gents' stableford claimed by Dylan Walsh.

Ballyhaunis

In the ladies' competition last weekend Mariette Potgieter was the winner with a score of 22pts, the gents' competition was won by T O'Boyle with a score of 36pts, second place went to K Kilbride and third place was claimed by J Jordan.

Castlebar

In the ladies' competition last weekend Susanna Kenny was the winner with a score of 27pts, the 13-hole stableford competition was claimed by Anne Wiesman who scored 29pts, Ann Gallagher finished in second place and Ciara Granahan came home in third place.

Mulranny

Enniscrone golfers claimed the top two spots in the first Open of 2020. Corine Mulrooney with 41pts left the men to settle for the minor placings with Anthony Holmes in second place also on 41pts with Michael Joyce continuing his excellent form to take third place on 39pts. Recent open weekend winners include Eugene McCormack, Paddy Chambers, Micheal Moran with back to back wins and Michael Joyce. The open weekend competitions continue from Thursday through to Sundays, throughout January, February and March. Entry for visitors is €15 with a four-ball costing €50. Golfnet numbers required. The Winter League is scheduled to resume in mid February with round seven on the weekend of February 9 and round eight the following weekend. The final is provisionally fixed for Sunday March 1. Membership is now due with those paying by end of January eligible for complimentary green fees.
