HSE develops Common Sense Parenting Programme in Mayo

The HSE in Mayo has developed a new parenting programme called Common Sense Parenting, a skills-based programme in which parents develop practical and effective ways to enhance their parenting skills and strengthen their children’s potential and quality of life.

The Common Sense Parenting programme helps parents to learn skills to encourage their children’s positive behaviour, discourage negative behaviour, and teach their children alternatives to problem behaviour.

The six-week programme is aimed at parents of children aged between six and 16 years, and involves weekly two-hour sessions at local venues throughout Mayo over the coming months. Parents who participate on the programme will develop and learn specific skills to use when interacting with their children, that will help set their children up for success in their adult lives.

Some of the skills that parents who participate on the Common Sense Parenting programme will learn include using effective praise for encouraging positive behaviour, developing techniques for using effective discipline, using consequences to change behaviour, preventing problems, correcting problem behaviour and teaching children social skills that are beneficial for themselves and others.

Any parent in Mayo with children aged between six and 16 years, who are interested in attending a Common Sense Parenting course, should send their name, postal address and a contact phone number to Martina O’Kane, Slí Nua, HSE West, 90 Knockaphunta Park, Castlebar, Co Mayo, or ring one of the following numbers: Mary Everard at 087 260 1283; Aoife Gannon at 086 837 1339; Olivia Varley at 086 174 0088; Karen Hope at 087 928 9700; or email [email protected].
