FAI Junior Cup takes centre stage this weekend

Soccer: Mayo League

The attention for a number of top sides in the Mayo League moves towards potential national glory this weekend with the three games in the fourth round of the FAI Junior Cup to be decided.

The action gets underway on Saturday afternoon when Manulla host Ballyheane at 2pm - the homeside head into this game on the back of a 6-1 win in the Calor Gas Super Cup semi-final last weekend over Ballyglass where Darragh Byrne (2 ), Sean Morrisey, Shea Benson, Owen Omataje and Enda McGahon all found the net.

Ballyheane had a big 8-2 win over Conn Rangers in the third round of the FAI Junior Cup in their last competitive outing and when these sides met in the league in the middle of September, they were 2-0 winners in Quigley Park thanks to goals from Imoh Atoi and Cillian Redmond.

On Sunday Westport United will host Ballyhaunis Town at 2pm in United Park - United had a 3-0 win over Ballina Town in round three of this competition a few weeks ago while Ballyhaunis Town needed penalties to get over Achill Rovers after a 2-2 draw in their third round clash. The homeside will be hot favourites to book their place in the next round of the competition against the east Mayo men who achieved their aim of staying in the Super League earlier in the season. When the teams met in the league, United won both games 2-0 in Station Rise and 5-0 at home.

The other fourth round clash in the competition will see Super League champions, Castlebar Celtic, make the trip to east Mayo to take on Kiltimagh-Knock United. In the previous round they dispatched Glenhest Rovers 5-1 on the road. Their opponents just missed out on promotion to the top flight for next season, finishing just one point behind Glenhest Rovers who took the last promotion spot going - in their third round clash they had a 2-0 win over Newport-Mulranny Wanderers.

There's also action in the second round of the TP Brennan Connacht Cup over the weekend with Crossmolina hosting Oughterard on Sunday at 2pm and Fahy Rovers taking on Swinford at the same time.
