Castlebar break losing run with derby day win

Rugby: Junior Rugby

Castlebar picked up their first win of the J1A league season last weekend with a 27-7 win over local rivals Westport in Cloondeash. The county town side had gone into the game having lost their previous four encounters this season, but they put that to right with an impressive showing at home.

They crossed the white line to touch down three times, with Luke Staunton, Sean Tonra and Mark Staunton getting the tries for their side and Barry Walsh adding the rest from his boot. Castlebar will be looking to follow up that win this weekend when they take on Monivea on the road to really get their season up and running.

Their opponents this weekend sit two points and two places in front of them in the standings at the minute and head into this game also on the back of a win, having seen off Sligo last weekend. Westport will be looking to get back on the winning horse this weekend when they host bottom-of-the-table Buccaneers in Carrowholly at 7.30pm on Saturday night.

In the J1B league this weekend Ballinrobe will face into a tough task as they try to pick up their third league win of the season, when they travel to league leaders Dunmore on Sunday. The south Mayo men have won two of their four games so far this season - beating Ballina and Loughrea - and haven't had a league game since the middle of last month, when they lost out in a high-scoring contest against Corinthians on the road. Ballina were in action last weekend in this division and were edged out by six points on a scoreline of 28-22 by Galwegians at home - this weekend they will be facing Galway opposition again when they are at home to Corinthians.

In the J1C League Ballyhaunis will face into their fourth league game of the season when they take on Corinthians in a re-fixed game at home on Sunday afternoon; having won two and drawn one of their games so far this season, the east Mayo men will be hoping to pick up the points to keep their promotion and title chase moving in the right direction.
