Westport Golf Club

Next Sunday April 19, will see the District Day Competition taking place in memory of the late Jim Lyons. In a slight change in format from last year’s competition, teams need not be from the same district.

However, it is expected that a number of teams may enter into the spirit of the competition as bragging rights between the residents of Rosbeg, Carrowholly, Carrabawn, Kings Hill, Knockranny, Fahy and Slogger can be very important on the night of the presentation.

Jim Lyons loved his golf. He celebrated his 80th birthday with a family fourball in Carrowholly teeing it up that morning at 8.30am. He never visited the prize table that often but holds a unique golfing distinction. On the 40th anniversary of the recording of the Buddy Holly classic; "Peggy Sue", Jim would be a part of a very special day at Westport Golf Club.

At the close of play, the competition secretary Liam Gibbons could not believe his eyes. 3 holes-in-one were recorded; Tommie Reilly (12th ), Albert Gallagher (12th ) & Jim (14th ). The occasion is recorded for prosperity in a portrait of the three golfers which hangs in the committee room at Westport. It is certainly unusual to mention “holes-in-one” on two consecutive weekly notices, following Blaine Lynch’s achievement at Carrick-on-Shannon but it would be extra special if one was recorded this Sunday.

Mayo Cancer Support Association

The Mayo Cancer Support Association is organising their sixth charity golf classic on Friday May 8. As in previous years Carraig Donn will be the main sponsor. Whilst not everybody can be a winner, in addition to the prizes for the top three this year there will be a lucky dip where everyone will have a chance to win a prize.

Mayo Cancer Support Assocation are very appreciative of your support over the years and they are very conscious of the demands on people in these difficult times. For this reason they have reduced the entry fee to €120 for a team of four or €30 per person. Tees and greens are available for sponsorship at €75 each. A time sheet will be in opereation and you are asked to contact either Ann Duffy on 086 375 3704 or Karen Cox on 087 645 5870 for more information.
