Foróige Clubs: Empowering Youth - Enriching Communities

Foróige is a leading national voluntary youth organisation engaged in youth development and education. Foróige Clubs consist of young people aged between 12 to 18 years under the guidance and support of adult volunteers.

The fundamental purpose of the organisation is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the development of society. Foróige gives young people the opportunity to build up their individual and team skills through their interaction with members, leaders, and their community.

There are currently 70 Foróige clubs in Mayo which provide activities and recreation for over 3500 young people. The key to successful Foróige Clubs is that young people take ownership by electing their own committee to run the club in co-operation with adult volunteers.

Foróige Clubs in Mayo meet regularly to enhance the development of members through club and inter-club events during the year. Examples of these include quizzes, talent events, discos and recognition nights. These events give the young people the chance to meet new members, make new friends, exchange ideas in a safe and caring environment and have fun while doing so. Traditionally the club calendar year runs from September to the end of June.

Volunteers are positive role models in their own community and are an integral part to meeting Foróige’s Purpose and Philosophy. Foróige Clubs could not exist without the time and dedication given by adult volunteers on a weekly basis. Training is provided to all adult volunteers by the Regional Youth Officer as well as additional support and guidance through Mayo District Council.

Each Foróige Club in the county is unique and activities carried out in the club depend very much on what members want to do. Foróige offers members a chance to display their work at local, regional and national level by entering The Foróige Youth Citizenship Programme. This programme offers young people the opportunity of organising community enhancing projects and making a positive difference to their communities.
