GAA: Mayo GAA Championships

Exciting pairings in senior quarter-finals

The draws for the last eight and semi-finals of the Mayo senior and intermediate championships took place on Tuesday night.

In the senior quarter finals, defending champions, Ballintubber, have been pitted against last year's intermediate champions, Belmullet; Castlebar Mitchels, who won three titles in a row from 2015 to 2017, will face off against Knockmore; last year's beaten finalists, Breaffy, will square off against Ballina Stephenites in what looks like it could be the game of the round and Ballaghaderreen will take on Davitts.

The draw for semi-finals has thrown up a potential re-match of last year's final, with the winner of the Ballintubber v Belmullet game taking on the winners of Breaffy v Ballina Stephenites and the other semi-final pitching together the winners of the Castlebar Mitchels v Knockmore against whoever comes out of the game between Ballaghaderreen and Davitts.

In the relegation play-offs in the senior championship, there is a south Mayo derby between Claremorris and Hollymount-Carramore, the other play-off will see the 2016 intermediate champions, Westport, take on the 2017 intermediate champions, Bohola Moy Davitts. The winners of these games will ensure their senior status for next year, with the two teams who lose meeting in a relegation final, where the loser will be relegated to intermediate for next year.

In the intermediate championship quarter-finals, the draw has pitted together The Neale and Kiltimagh, last year's beaten finalists Burrishoole against Crossmolina Deel Rovers, who were relegated from senior last year; the third quarter final is the all West Mayo meeting of Louisburgh and Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin and the final last eight game will see Ardnaree go toe-to-toe with Ballyhaunis.

The semi-final draw which was also made, will see the winners of The Neale v Kiltimagh take on the victors of Louisburgh and Parke, with the other semi-final pairing the winners of Ardnaree and Ballyhaunis to take on whoever comes out of the game between Burrishoole and Crossmolina Deel Rovers.

In the intermediate relegation play-offs, Shrule-Glencorrib will take on Islandeady - and Ballinrobe will meet Swinford. The same process applies to the intermediate relegation play-offs as to the senior championship.

The junior championship semi-final draw was also made on Tuesday night, Ardagh will meet Castlebar Mitchels B, while Kilmeena are waiting for the winners of the quarter final that still has to be played, following the postponement of last weekend's scheduled meeting between Kilmaine and Westport B - following an appeal by Achill.
