Senator Michelle Mulherin has welcomed confirmation that Dr Enda Loftus will take up the GP position in Lahardane on February 1, 2020.
Senator Michelle Mulherin said: "I have just received confirmation from the HSE Primary Care that Dr Loftus has accepted the offer of the vacant GP position in Laharane.
"I have been pressing the HSE since the public meeting in Lahardane in August at which local people expressed their concerns over the lack of a permanent GP in the village.
"This is great news for the people of Lahardane who have been without a full-time GP since the retirement of Dr Paul Nolan in 2018. I would like to extend best wishes to Dr Loftus in his new post
"The difficulties in the recruitment and retention of Irish medics continues to be a challenge, with many towns struggling to replace doctors who retire or move on to a fresh challenge.
"In this regard, I would like to thank the HSE for their efforts and commitment to providing first class primary care services for the people of Lahardane. Also I would like to compliment the work of the excellent local committee which I was happy to work with. The HSE has also informed me that they will now advertise the vacant positions in Bangor and Glenamoy as soon as possible."
